A Week at theSpace!
On Monday Peter drops in to register for the new Digital Art program slated to start next week. He wants be sure to reserve a spot in this newest installment of the popular four-hour workshop.
Peter plans to also register soon for the next sessions of the film production course on Thursdays, which fits perfectly in between the days he is swimming and volunteering at a local shop.
Some of the other members are really enjoying this opportunity to bring to life their anime sculptures, while learning every stage of the film production process.
TheSpace is also planning to put out another story video based on a script prepared by some of the members, and Peter hopes to join the production team before the next session begins.
Peter has a monthly membership pass which allows him to start his own personal project, and provides a discount on any of the ongoing workshops--he enjoys taking advantage of the opportunity to also drop by during the day and have a coffee in the Café area.
He will often sit and work on one of the computers on site or chat with the facilitator, whenever he wants to get out of the house. He enjoys those opportunities to talk, especially when he finds he is going through a difficult time.
Tuesday Peter decides to join the ongoing ping pong tournament, and it’s a way to meet and make plans with other people who might be stopping by.
Peter’s friend, Josee, likes dropping in on Wednesday’s when the Yoga session is running, and she is taking the Art class on Tuesdays and Friday.
She is currently creating a series of wall hangings for her apartment, and sometimes her support worker from CMHA comes along with her.
Her worker has a Friend of Member pass, and she will occasionally stop by, to grab a coffee and a muffin and to talk to the facilitator and pick up information on events and local resources.
There are a number of small social enterprise workshops going on at theSpace---including the bi-annual art show in the Gallery, before the holiday season starts, and Josee is excited to prepare a couple of her best pieces for selection.
She keeps her work on site in a storage area, and this way she can just show up when she wants and start to work.
There is a brainstorming/workshop presentation this Wednesday evening that Peter also wants to attend, where a local businessman is coming by to present to interested members. He is looking at hiring some individuals to work at his software company, and is also looking for ideas on what sort of things he can support as a corporate sponsor, as well as the type of projects members would be interested in.
On Friday night they are having a live gaming competition, and Peter and a few more recent members, are looking forward to testing their skills, against a team in another city. This will be broadcast live.
Peter has become really good friends with Jonathan, in particular, someone he used to know, when they were in high school. They had lost touch, but they are now enjoying hanging out together and thinking of moving in as roommates.
The staff facilitator is going to meet with them both in a week, at the Housing Meet and Greet, to talk about how they might go about finding a place, and what sort of skills they might need to tweak before they feel more ready.
She feels that she has gotten to know them both really well during their time at theSpace, so she also has a few ideas to suggest to them.
Jonathan has been living on his own already; he has a trustee looking after his affairs, so the facilitator will call in his case manager and this Public Guardian trustee to join the conversation.
This person is also going to be at theSpace next week, one evening, to present to parents; Peter’s mother has already attended a few evening workshops to provide her feedback on programs, but also to receive some group counseling support when she and Peter were going through a difficult phase. She said she enjoys the chance to chat with other parent’s and doesn’t feel so out of the loop.
All in all, there are always so many new and interesting things going on at his Space, that Peter always looks forward to dropping by!
