A Pragmatic Creator

When asked what theSpace is about, my thoughts spring immediately to Malaika and her work over the past years. Malaika was one of the first individuals to become a member of theSpace, and is the artist who has created the large pink-toned abstract painting which has graced our advertising and  branding process.

Initially, Malaika was hesitant to make use of the more technical options which were made available to her at theSpace--- things such as laptops or email---although she has since embraced all things digital, and never looked back!

At the same time, we have been delighted to be part of Malaika’s three year long creative journey, to date, at theSpace. Malaika is a vibrant
presence and a well known and regarded member, someone who is
extremely caring and a spontaneous mentor to others--- always checking in and providing positive advice or feedback.

Malaika is a pragmatic creator, approaching projects and workshops with enthusiasm and an eye for ambient and insightful creations, which have been met with great success and response.  Whether it's photography mixed with glitch art or abstract painting, her impressive range of work is a reminder to herself, and her followers, just how much skill she has and how much she has accomplished. At the same time, her spirit and drive to keep trying new things continues to inspire everyone she meets.

These sentiments remain true, particularly as applied to her latest work; namely, writing and recording her own podcast episodes. This latest medium has also helped expand Malaika’s mentoring role and to reach a wider audience, as she reflects upon and relates her personal narratives to others. Her podcasts include such subjects as ‘how best to deal with anxiety’, ‘sticking to a positive routine’, and ways of ‘bettering one's life.’

Michael Nedohin is well liked and well know for his bursts of laughter, love of coffee, particular hobbies and all things palm trees, which he has with him at all times in the form of a pamphlet.

At the same time, Michael has also established himself as an artist with an equally strong interest for creating. Regardless of the medium or tools, Michael is always eager to start a new project. He knows exactly what he wants to do yet isn’t afraid to ask for help to make his vision a reality.

He has become well versed with video making, story telling, and character design as well as recording and editing. He has mastered Photoshop and easily finds, collects, edits and arranges photos before printing. His desire to create knows no limit and has fueled his impressive output of work and helped to amass a vast portfolio of work. Throughout each workshop there is always several “Whats next!?” as he is eager to try new things.

In his spare time he enjoys traveling, grabbing an Icecap, visiting family, going out for dinner, and researching history online. He loves making pamphlets and finding or collecting antique items such as old keys.

A lot of his past work was inspired by Godzilla and Harry Potter but has now expanded to include his own characters as well as stories which express his thoughts and view of the world. Most recently his paintings of local landmarks such as the Byward Market and Glebe have been met with admiration and several prints being sold.

Michael is a great artist and a wonderful example for others. He makes art because he wants to create and he does so for himself.

Everything else is secondary.

Julia has been a regular member of theSpace for almost two years. She identifies as an artist, and as someone who has “always been creative”. Having worked most her life and been part of many creative workshops, over the years, she has now found a variety of new tools to showcase her wide-ranging interests and talents.

Being a well-practiced painter and illustrator, Julia has adapted her own unique process to various digital implements and technologies; including the use of a mouse, a stylus pad and a tablet. Her interest in attempting to navigate new media and techniques during workshops at theSpace, has allowed her to construct a large and diverse portfolio of work.

Julia has stated that she particularly enjoys painting flowers and landscapes of Ottawa.  Her interests include crosswords, and summertime, as well as her favourite show Criminal Minds: Beyond Borders, with main characters from the show appearing frequently in her work. She also participates in gymnastics as a Special Olympian.

Julia continues to add to her long list of accomplishments, engaging in article writing, illustrations for a magazine, and selling a selection of her works--which are currently on display in the community and online. Most recently she has begun to work on a commissioned portrait series.

Telling Stories In New Ways

Escape From The Hive -  Turn Based Survival Game

My turn based board game was inspired by Resident Evil, Walking Dead and other zombies movies. The characters are from my comic strip and short film I created at theSpace. I write a lot stories and I wanted to showcase more of the world and continue their story.

I found images of characters online and drew my versions on paper with marker using projectors and scanners. Once on the computer I coloured them on Photoshop and Krita. The paint bucket tool was handy when colouring all my drawings. I found a lot of scary pictures on Google as well. After illustrating each image I designed the cards and the board pieces. Everything was Printed including a rule booklet and the front box cover so than everything was glued together.

The hardest part was deciding the rules for all the cards and how they work together. It also took a long time to glue everything together. The best part was getting to pick the characters, draw them and decide what happens to them. I love zombies and games.

My next games will be more like a video game. Like a mix between Left 4 Dead and Silent Hill 3 and Outlast with the same characters maybe a few new faces

Godzilla Vs Gamera - Short Film

“I used paper and pencil to draw Gamera and for Godzilla I used paintbrushes and a projector and black paint. After I scanned my pictures I used Photoshop to color all the different layers and crop both of them. I used a list of words like “attack”, “Godzilla” and copied and pasted them from Google Translate to get the Japanese characters. Finally I got silhouettes of mountains and cities. I edited them using Krita to colour them.

I recorded the music using the keyboard at theSpace and FLStudios and played the same keys and looped it so it lasted longer. I found sound effects on Youtube and downloaded them as MP3 files using a free converting website.

Later, I used Cyberlink Power Director to put all the layer of and monsters together. I used the motion editor to bring still images to life. I am a HUGE Godzilla fan, especially the older Japanese films. It was fun to create my own movie!
